General reminders: Post your fic between the Tuesday February 14th and Wednesday February 29th, please. Also, if you need to drop out for any reason, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let [livejournal.com profile] readingredhead or me know as soon as possible so we can get a pinch hitter. Thank you so much for participating!

We're extending the sign-up deadline for our Friend/Ship exchange by 24 hours, since I previously forgot to cross-post information about sign-ups to [livejournal.com profile] myriadwords... *headdesk* The new deadline is midnight EST on Saturday January 14 (that's tomorrow!). Assignments will still be sent out via email by midnight EST on Sunday.

As usual, if you have any questions, please comment and either [livejournal.com profile] rusting_roses or I will get back to you as soon as we can!
[identity profile] readingredhead.livejournal.com
So you want to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] dai_stiho's first Friend/Ship exchange? You've come to the right place!

In the spirit of the Young Wizards books, this exchange isn't just focused on romantic pairings -- we want to celebrate the friendships and familial relationships that are so important in these books just as much as any romantic relationships that are present. As Roshaun so aptly puts it in Wizards at War, “For so high and honorable an estate, ‘just’ seems a poor modifier to choose.” What better way to celebrate Valentine's Day than to write -- and read! -- fic that focuses on the complex relationships between these characters we know and love?

The Rules

In case anyone hasn't participated in an exchange before, the idea is simple: you write a story for someone, and you receive a story from someone else! You'll receive a set of friend/ships and prompts to work from based on the friend/ships you offered to write.

To sign up for this exchange, you just need to leave a comment on this post in the following format:

LJ Name:
Email:
Requests:
1.
2.
3.
Offers:
1.
2.
3.
More information (optional):

You must request three friend/ship pairings and leave short prompts for each, and offer at least three friend/ship pairings that you would be willing to write. In order to save time and space, in this challenge a slash (/) between character names will be used to designate a romantic pairing, an ampersand (&) will be used to designate a friendship pairing, and both used together (&/) will designate that the requester is fine with gen or ship fic for the pairing.

Here's what my sign-up looks like ([livejournal.com profile] rusting_roses and I will be writing for each other, as well as pinch-hitting):

LJ Name: [livejournal.com profile] readingredhead
Email: readingredhead07@yahoo.com
Requests:
1. Dairine&/Carmela; tired of being on the outside
2. Nita&Ronan; Kit's busy with something or other and Nita finds herself taking his place and helping Ronan out on an assignment.
3. Lone Power&/One's Champion; "People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint -- it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly...timey wimey...stuff." Their relationship only makes sense out-of-order.
Offers: any (I will write any pairing, gen or ship fic!)
More information (optional): my Tumblr (http://linguaphile.tumblr.com/), especially my most recent Yuletide Letter (http://linguaphile.tumblr.com/post/12901282554/yuletide-letter)

A quick note about offers: It is perfectly okay to offer more than three friend/ships, to offer a pairing as friends only or as ship only (to be designated by & and or /), to offer to write any friend/ship pairings, and to offer to write "any pairing except x/y" (ex. "any pairing except Nita/Ronan," etc.). It is also okay to request and offer multi pairings (ex. Kit&Ronan&Darryl), but for the sake of matching please only request one multi pairing per sign-up and please limit the pairing to three characters!

The "more information" section is an opportunity for you to tell your writer what specific things you like or don't like in fic, if you have any triggers your writer should avoid, etc. -- essentially to provide general information beyond the pairings and short prompts. This can either be a sentence or two written in the sign-up, or links to journal posts or other sites where you may have already discussed some of your fic preferences (if you do include links to journal posts, please ensure those posts are not friends-locked!). Note that although we ask you to provide prompts and allow you to provide further information, as a writer your only requirement is to produce a story of over 1000 words about the friend/ship pairing requested; writing to the prompt is lovely, but if you just can't make it work for you, it's not required.

All comments will be screened (we wouldn't want to give away who requested/offered what!), but you will receive an email once your sign-up has been added to our sign-up list to confirm that we've got you down for the challenge.

The Timeline

Sign-ups are open now (!) and will run until midnight EST on Saturday, January 14. As soon as sign-ups close, [livejournal.com profile] rusting_roses and I will start matching writers with their recipients and emailing out assignments; these should all be sent by the end of the day Sunday, January 15

Once you receive your assignment, it's time to start writing! Unlike the previous challenge, there won't be assigned due dates; we just ask that these fics be posted sometime between Valentine's Day on February 14th and the last day of the month, February 29th. As the posting window gets closer, we'll post more information about betas, pinch-hitters, and protocol for defaulting, so keep watching this comm!

As always, feel free to comment with any questions, or get in touch with me or [livejournal.com profile] rusting_roses directly! Looking forward to seeing your requests!
[identity profile] rusting-roses.livejournal.com
Hello everyone! I know that Yuletide is just wrapping up, and I know that people are still recovering from the winter holidays, but I'm posting today to see who is interested in doing a Valentine's Day Friend/Ship Exchange! I hope there are lots of you out there who want to join me in celebrating the characters and relationships that we adore so much.

In the spirit of the Young Wizards books, this exchange isn't just to focus on a certain pairing—we want to celebrate the friendships and familial relationships that are so important in these books just as much as any romantic relationships that are present. As things stand now, we will open this comm on Monday the 9th for sign-ups and sign-ups will run until Friday the 13th. [livejournal.com profile] readingredhead and I will match everyone up over the weekend and send sign-ups out (hopefully) by Monday the 16th.

Instead of having the mods post the fics on the comm secretly, we're planning on allowing everyone to post to their own journal, so long as they are cross-posted here to let their recipient know that the fic is up. Unlike the previous challenge, there won't be assigned due dates; we just ask that these fics be posted sometime between Valentine's Day on February 14th and the last day of February (the 29th—yay leap years!). We're also planning on having a 1000 word minimum, as before.

Comments? Questions? Concerns? Feel free to just drop a comment; [livejournal.com profile] readingredhead or I will respond as quickly as we can. Check back on Monday to see a complete rules/faq/sign-up post. We hope to see lots of people join us for this exchange!
[identity profile] rusting-roses.livejournal.com
As you guys hopefully remember, our challenge will be wrapping up in a few weeks here! With a few prompts hopefully coming in as early as the first week of July, I thought that now might be a good time to discuss betaing! Since your fics must be betaed before they can be posted, if you don't already have one, here is resource for you: If you are interested in betaing or need a beta, just leave a comment or answer someone else's. I fully encourage you all to get this settled as soon as you can, so as to give your betas the maximum amount of time to pretty up your fics.

As usual, you can drop any questions or concerns in the comments as well.

Thanks, and I'm looking forward to reading all your work! :D

Reminder

[identity profile] rusting-roses.livejournal.com
Just wanted to drop a reminder to everyone that sign-ups close tomorrow at MIDNIGHT EASTERN TIME. If you would like to write a fic for this challenge, you must choose your prompt and posting date before that time. Thank you all so much, and I can't wait to see everyone's work!
[identity profile] rusting-roses.livejournal.com
Welcome to the prompt claiming post! Below I’ve got the amazing 52 prompts that you all have submitted to the challenge! I can’t wait to see all of the amazing fics that come out of this. However, please follow these rules:

1. Each prompt can only be claimed ONCE. There are no exceptions to this rule.
2. The prompt claiming is first come, first serve.
3. We will be doing our best to make sure that all of the claims are put on the list as quickly as possible, but it may be best for you to check the comments to double check that the prompt you want is not taken.
4. Your first time commenting, you may claim up to two prompts. However, after that you must wait until Friday, May 27th at 9:00 AM to claim any more prompts.
5. You can claim as many prompts as you want, but all must meet the minimum of 1000 words.

In addition to choosing a prompt(s), we also ask you to pick the day that you wish to publish your work. The posting will run from July 1st to July 15th with no more than two people posting each day. Each prompt must have its own date. For example, if I claim two prompts, I may choose to post them both on July 15th, but I may also chose to post one on the 3rd and one on the 8th; if I chose to do the first option, I will be the only poster that day. However, if I chose the second option, one other person may post on both the 3rd and 8th with me. As with the prompts, double checking the comments to ensure that the day you desire is free is advisable.

When claiming a prompt, we ask you to follow this format:

username:
prompt:
date of posting:

Example:

username: [livejournal.com profile] rusting_roses
prompt: Tom/Carl: Where and how did they first meet?
date of posting: July 7th

As I’ve mentioned before, if none of the prompts tickle your fancy, you may use the theme “fear”. If you chose to do this theme, simply put “fear” instead of the prompt you’ve chosen so that you are still on the author list.

Now for the last two items: firstly, while this post is up at midnight, you may not begin claiming posts until 9:00 AM on Tuesday, May 24th. If you claim earlier than that, you will be forced to wait an additional twelve hours before being allowed to submit a claim. In addition, one of the mods will reply to your comment once you are officially on the list in order to confirm your status as author and for the prompt/date you have claimed.

YOU ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE YOUR FINISHED FIC READY, BETAED AND POSTED NO LATER THAN MIDNIGHT OF THE DAY YOU HAVE CLAIMED.

While you are welcome to keep working on your fics until you are done with them and post them to the general com, once your posting date has passed, you can no longer submit it to the challenge.

And now for the part you’re all waiting for! The prompts are listed as either gen or pairing; however, gen does not preclude the presence of pairings should the author desire it. Here they are:

Gen or Character Specific

1. Any non-wizard who knows about wizardry; assisting from the sidelines
2. Nita's college roommates get used to the weird people who seem to appear in their room out of nowhere (and occasionally injured).
4. Carmela: Her parents dealt with wizardry pretty well, and they dealt with her intergalactic chocolate smuggling pretty well, so you would think coming out as queer wouldn't be a big deal, right?
5. Irina: What's it like being planetary wizard for all Earth, where did she get the parakeet, and how does she keep her busy schedule secret from the neighbors?
6. Nita/The Peridexis: Discussing the future after the reveal at the end of a wizard of Mars.
7. The Hesper: What it is like to exist out of time, to make the decision to embody, what it means to her to be the Unfallen Power, etc
8. Dairine finally meets Darth Vader.
9. Nita: Shades of grey
10. "The universe ended and I watched." Any character.
11. Dairine: "A still more glorious dawn awaits. Not a sunrise, but a galaxy rise: a morning filled with 400 billion suns." - Carl Sagan
12. Irina: A day in the life of Earth's Senior
13. Roshaun: Splendid Robes, or: Wellakhit Fashion 101
14. The Lone Power: Playing by the rules
15. The One's Champion (and The Powers that Be): The construction of Timeheart
16. Crashing Stars, Creasing Paper (Preferably with Liused inside)
17. Three Encounters in a Café
18. "Give it your best shot," Ronan taunted Darryl
19. Filif: Wreathe A Thorny Crown
20. "Can prophecy turn out wrong?"
21. Ed: What is life like for the Master Shark? What went through his mind as he decided to change roles?
22. Dairine has grown up and taken Roshaun's place on his home planet.
23. Timeheart: What is it like from the inside?
24. Wizardry from the point of view of an outsider.
25. Nita's Aunt Annie - what happened to her marriage/her wizard partner?
26. Arhu (from 'The Book of Night with Moon,' etc.) as a Senior.
27. Nita and Dairine find themselves teamed up on a project.
28. Darryl: What kind of wizardries does Darryl do? What's a typical job for him?
29. Any of The Powers that Be: Observing the growth of humanity, in the same way a human might view the development of a new puppy.

Nita/Kit

30. After certain events at the end of A Wizard of Mars, they find themselves having to take a look at their new relationship
31. The college years. How does it affect their relationship?
32. Mrs. Rodriguez has long since taken to buying food specifically for Nita, even before she and Kit were dating; does anything change now that they are?

Tom/Carl

33. Carl telling Tom about Nita's role as the Silent Lord during Deep Wizardry
34. Nita/Kit and/or Dairine/Roshaun: Going to the seniors for relationship advice

36. Tom and Carl's early adventures in wizardry.
37. What is that one price worse than a lifeprice that Carl mentions in Deep Wizardry?

Dairine/Roshaun

38. Dairine has grown up and taken Roshaun's place on his home planet. Now it looks as if she will finally find him.
39. Sparkling kisses and firework eyes

Nelaid/Miril

40. The Day of the Son's Ascension to Sun
41. With the apparent death of Roshaun, Wellakh is changing—and so is Dairine

Nita/Lone Power

42. (Relationship or Gen): a final encounter between beloved enemies, sometime in the far off future.
43. UST in multiple meetings (non-angsty ending)

Crossovers, Fusions and AUs

44. Artemis Fowl Crossover: Two smart kids who've grown up a bit
45. A lot of missing kids go missing on Ordeals. A law enforcement team (crossover of your choice or OC) discovers a pattern.
46. NCIS: LA Crossover: It's frustrating enough when Hetty declares their case is out of the jurisdiction of NCIS--then she tells Callen's team to turn it over to a couple of teenagers from upstate New York. Shenanigans ensue
47. Hetalia Crossover: Some sort of interaction with the Young Wizards characters (Nita/Kit or Tom/Carl in particular)
48. This statement from shitmystudentswrite.tumblr.com as an AU, thanks to the Lone Power's interference in the timeline: "Rome went on to conquer other territories and planets."
49. Doctor Who Crossover: While researching ways people can "cheat" death, Dairine stumbles across information on Time Lords and recognizes The Man in the Bar.
50. Puella Magi Madoka Magika Crossover: The sudden emergence of a bright new Power, brimming with Potentiality
51. Doctor Who Crossover (because it's canon!); lost and found in time and space
52. Doctor Who Crossover: Carmela takes lunch/tea/whatever with a time traveling alien

Banners!

May. 11th, 2011 03:55 pm
[identity profile] rusting-roses.livejournal.com
Since you're reading this post, I assume you've seen the pretty banner at the top of the screen. It's okay, I'll wait for you to gaze at it adoringly once again.

I know, it is pretty awesome.

Anyways, your mods thought some of you might be interested in pimping the challenge (hint hint, nudge nudge) to raise even more awareness by hosting it on your LJ. If you are interested, just copy and paste the below text:

<lj user="dai_stiho>

Add any sort of commentary you'd like, and reach out as well to any communities that you know of (besides [livejournal.com profile] myriadwords or [livejournal.com profile] youngwizards who have already been gracious enough to allow our banners). I'd hate to see someone miss out on this because the fandom slipped through the cracks. So go out, my minions my fellow wizards, and pass along the news!

And in case, for some reason, you're not aware, prompting will last until Sunday the 22nd at midnight, so be sure to get in your prompts before then.

Thank you all so much!
[identity profile] rusting-roses.livejournal.com
Welcome to the prompt post to our very first Young Wizards challenge! As usual [livejournal.com profile] rusting_roses, [livejournal.com profile] sarinmorphine and [livejournal.com profile] readingredhead are more than happy to clarify anything.

This is the first step of our challenge. From today, May 9th at 9:00, until May 22nd at midnight we will be completely open to prompts! Comments will be screened (we don't want to give away who prompted the original idea, after all), but you're more than welcome to leave as many as you so choose. The only thing you need to do is leave a one—two sentence prompt with a pairing (if applicable). Prompts (and fills) can be as specific or vague as you want, so long as they meet the length requirement.

Rules:

1. As long as it's within the Young Wizards verse/characters, any prompt is suitable
2. Leave as many prompts as you'd like, so long as they are all made as separate comments to this post
3. Any and all pairings are fine
4. Be creative! If AUs or fusions are your cup of tea, prompt it!

Examples:

Tom/Carl: Where and how did they first meet?
Gen: Nita comes to realize that Mr. Millman isn't the only adult in her life that knows more than he lets on
Now to go prompt these two ;)

Now, have at it!
[identity profile] rusting-roses.livejournal.com
